Successful Queen Rearing: Short Course
By Marla Spivak and Gary Reuter
Softcover book from Minnesota Extension Service, Univ. of Minn. Dept of Entomology about honey bees, 1994 revised 2006. Contains plan details and diagrams on rearing queen bees, timing, biology, stock selection and maintenance, the Doolittle method, equipment needed, mating yards, marking queens, record keeping, calendar details and important points. While most queen bees purchased by bee keepers have been reared in California and the southeast, the authors make a case for obtaining queens from rearing in the north, such as Minnesota and the upper Midwest. One reason is to further separate stock from the chance of contact with Africanized bees.
